Cloud computing - Best example/description of what cloud computing could represent 100+ years ago(for a paper)?

Anytime period of at least a 100 years ago. So back then what would be the best example of how cloud computing works. Need help for my paper. So again what can cloud computing best be depicted as from history.|||Cloud computing implies remote storage, backup and access, so libraries come to mind.

Any Advice on Cloud Computing ?

Hi, I am working professional. I want to change my career. Can I study Cloud Computing? If yes which are the certification available? And what is the Course Fee? Is it worth of studying for future ?|||Cloud computing will be increasingly important in the future ... this is a 48 credit program, 16 courses, whereas most similar programs are 10 or 12 courses. At $656/credit, the total tuition cost comes out to $31,488 which is not cheap.|||interesting question... you see, cloud computing is essentially computing from the internet (cloud). you would really end up studying the internet. im sure there are colleges that have a course maybe in the history of the internet or networking, but i can't say ive heard of a cloud computing certificate... im sorry, but networking is a VERY interesting topic.

Three categories of Cloud Computing?

I need more clarity on the three categories of Cloud Computing - IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. What purpose do these serve? As a user, do i have the option of using only one service amongst the three or do they always come together? How do these three differ from the three layers of Cloud Computing - Application, Platform and Infrastructure? Again, can I avail of just one?|||IaaS. Infrastructure as a Service. PaaS. Platform as a Service. SaaS. Software as a Service. SaaS. Software as a Service|||SaaS is Software as a service . As the name indicates software is provided as a service .ex a music player is in remote server and you can listen a music file in that player.

PaaS is Platform as a service. It provides a platform as a service . Suppose i hav a java file bt dont hav a JDE. i can run my java file in this service since a platform is provided via cloud.

IaaS-Infrastructure as a service.it provides a whole infrastructure which includes software, storage, platform etc ex any mail servers (where client app , storage etc are provided)

Is cloud computing like clustering?

i plan on making a Linux cluster ( for media purposes) using a couple of spare computers i have. I really wanna use ubuntu (since most of the the packages im using are .deb and im used to the bash) for the cluster. I just looked on the ubuntu server web page info and it says i can use cloud computing. SOO to make a long story short is cloud computing like clustering?|||No, nothing so specific. It's a vague term meaning "putting your data somewhere out there on the internet" and usually with programs on related web sites which can operate on it rather than running programs on your own computer.

It's reminiscent of the "wheel of reincarnation" concept from the early days of computers, where you'd have a mainframe and terminals to operate it (analagous to the server and your computer), but over time the terminals became smarter and smarter until they became computers in their own right. But then we started getting remote access to those from "dumb terminals" ... which became smarter, and so the wheel turned.|||Here's a good video how Cloud Computing works

Cloud computing with Linux OS?

and what are the advantages and disadvantages of using it for cloud computing?|||The benefits of cloud computing鈥攁ccessing your data and applications stored on remote hardware by way of the Internet instead of keeping it all in your local workstation鈥攕till requires a leap of logic for many. But now that a workstation can go anywhere as a smartphone, a stripped-down netbook, or even an e-book reader, it's practically a virtual desktop operating in conjunction with a virtual server anyway. If the user can be anywhere, so can the source for data and applications.|||Your going to have to explain what you mean by "cloud computing" because it means a whole lot of different things to different people.

Do you mean:

Using a low powered device (netbook or tablet) to access applications on the web using a browser?

Using a central server as a collaborative meeting site were multiple workstations share data

Or

Using leased computing power to set up virtual machines to dynamically add computing power on demand

Or

They are providing Cloud Computing Support without any hidden cost.

What are the differences between the Cloud Computing Model and the Client-Server Model ?

Client-Server is more localized while the Cloud is global. The Client-Server can essentially be a sub-directory of the wider encompassing Cloud but not always.

On a scale lets assume the Client-Server is your network, the Cloud is then the rest of the world network outside of your core (server) gateway, and can technically be measured to infinity; which is what the cloud represents.

What is Cloud Computing?

Can anyone explain what is cloud computing both technical and non-technical and if anyone can site some examples that uses cloud computing. Thank you very much :)|||The term was adopted from the use of cloud symbols to represent the internet in diagrams and charts. This can be availed online where customers can get storage services, virtual servers, applications and so much more.|||Most of the time, “cloud computing” could be the standby time with the Internet to perform applications or store data. Until recently, most software packages ran on your own laptop or computer. Cloud computing changes that: programs run using a remote server (or servers), accessed by (however , not stored on) your personal computer. Web-based email? Cloud computing. Google Apps? Cloud computing. Facebook? Cloud computing.|||Home example: You have a bunch of stuff you want to back up, so if your house burns down or gets hit by a 787, you won't lose the pictures of the kids. You pay for an online backup service, which stores that data on a bunch of servers somewhere. That's using the cloud.

Corporate example: A company wants a web site with a ton of web based services, but they don't want to pay for or manage the infrastructure themselves. They pay someone else (like Amazon) to host their services for them. That's using the cloud.

Basically, instead of doing stuff with your own computer or your own network, you do it on a server over the internet.|||Cloud computing is about having infrastructure, software and platforms delivered to the end users via the internet. Computing resources are availed online where customers can get storage services, virtual servers, applications and so much more.

Is cloud computing a step backwards?

Years ago when I was a programmer and computer operator we had virtual computing. You would use a dumb terminal to dial up the mainframe computer and run programs. Everything was stored on the mainframe. Your terminal was just a Selectric Typewriter. Other than having wireless connections and a much better interface how is cloud computing different?|||For your typical user, cloud computing isn't much different than using a mainframe. The biggest difference is that it allows you to access your work from anywhere in the world, instead of needing to be in the same room or on the same machine.

From a developer's perspective, they are much different. For one thing, cloud computing is built around scalability. Cloud programs are designed to be run on multiple servers simultaneously, so you can get much more power than you can on a single desktop. And if you get more users, you can just add more machines. Cloud computing allows your programs to always be up-to-date since you're getting it straight from the developer every time you run it. It allows you to offload responsibility for maintenance to the original developer (since they're running the servers, you don't need to worry about the program crashing)

A simple everyday example is Microsoft Word. You install it on your computer and apply updates to it every so often. If your hardware dies then so does your MS Word. On the other hand is Google Docs. With that word processor, all you care about is that you can edit and save your document. Google will take care of the maintenance.

So, if you upload pictures to a site (facebook, picasaweb, flickr, etc.) and can then access them from anywhere, they are being stored on that company's hard drive, or their cloud.

What's so bad about cloud computing?

I heard it will kill Windows and Mac OS X, it will force us to use internet and pay per application, which it is stupid! I don't want to use cloud computing in future. I don't want to have to connect the internet to just use it. Will it ruin most of good tech jobs?|||I think it's the future of computing. Having all of your resources to you at all times is a huge advantage.|||I view cloud computing as another channel. Apple will announce cloud music, wherever you be, you can fetch dat tune and wozza the crowd on your iApple iHardware. The limitation will be the video which is what people will want. Video because of its high bandwidth will have unpredictable fetching. The idea though, is you will be able to dial home and connect to your TV. How your TV is connected will give either buffering -- play -- pause/buffering -- play -- pause/buffering etc., or banding or even live streaming with good results.

This idea that users will rent software on a per usage basis from the cloud just doesn't look feasible. I will never own a Microsoft portable device primarily because MS goes out of their way to engineer incompatibility.

Good tech jobs? Maybe not, but like the App Stores for iPhone and Android, cloud computing should let the little guy make a one-hit wonder. Again, I just don't see MS following that marketing model and they will be arriving late into the game with nothing new or better. MS is what it is because of OEM Windows and twisting the arms of the hardware manufacturers. MS comes in with a dead-duck phone company (Nokia) and the hardware needs a totally new design, so watch out for bugs.|||wel it will kill Windows for sure. Mac OS X is actually adjusting to use cloud computing to its advantage. the pure nature of windows will cause it to die though. the time of the PC is slowly ending. Someday we will not have computers. just terminals. a keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor. All processing and data handling will be done on a superserver and sent to our terminals from fiber optic cables at near light speed. If you want to upgrade your processor, all you have to do is extend your cloud account.

You will be able to access your computer and its apps from anywhere in the world. I think its a great new technology and Mac will be at the center of it all. Windows will slowly die out due to it being "handicapped" unable to talk to other computers and share each others apps.|||Yeah it'll kill Windows....NOT. Microsoft is already well into the cloud game. There are online versions of the office applications and various other cloud bases MS apps. Windows 8 is rumored to feel more like a smartphone interface than your traditional desktop as well.

Personally I don't have anything against cloud computing, but I don't like to rely on it. Currently I can type up an estimate for customer at any time at any of my computers. With cloud apps I could type an estimate from any computer with an internet connection. Yet if there is a storm that knocks out the internet for a day or so I'm out of luck. I can't type it without access to my cloud apps where I could type it with a regular installed program and hand deliver it instead of relying on the internet.

Cloud computing with have it's advantages but also it'd drawbacks. I think you'll find the majority of people will be hesitant to rely on it without some sort of system to fall back on.|||I don't like the idea, but this exactly is the reaction many have when they hear something knew, especially in terms of technology. I just have an idea about the files not being as secure and that one day, it'll crash and everything will be missing; it'll all be on servers instead. I know that our hard drives can crash, but I'm worried everything will crash and more than one computer's files will be gone. But that's just me.

What are real time applications of 'Cloud computing'?

Give some examples...|||Basically any web application/site that store "data" for you without you being aware of where/how exactly it's being stores is "cloud computing". The data goes inside a cloud %26amp; when reqd. comes out of that cloud. As a user you can't see (or don't care to) the inside working of the cloud e.g

1) Email servers like Yahoo %26amp; GMail store your mails which may also have file attachments too. Some enterprises rent such Email services for internal use from other vendors to keep their capital cost low. (Email servers %26amp; software are a bit costly to buy %26amp; maintain)

2) You can store files to servers on the web so that you can access them any where. How it is stored/retrieved is not important. e.g. DropBox

3) You want a database to store information but don't want the hassle to install one on your machine, you get that as well e.g. Microsoft Azure

3) You get CPU time too in cloud computing. So, if you were working for some complex problem %26amp; you temporarily require a server performing the computation for it, without requiring buy such high end servers, you get that too as part of cloud computing. e.g. Google Apps, Azure

Apple has also introduced its own cloud computing which basically caters to email service %26amp; file storage service.|||At the end of the day, it is just distributed computing.

The best Cloud vendors offer "virtual servers", or computing units that can be provisioned dynamically.

Which means that you can now use servers that you do not own, to run an application.

The application can be anything you would run on a normal server. However, your cost is lower.

Many websites will use "cloud servers" as as caching servers, or even web servers.

Some companies will use Auto Scaling capabilities to allow new cloud servers to be added to their infrastructure when the traffic is heavy.

Imagine that Facebook or Yahoo news just picked up an article or an application you wrote.

A LOT of people would hit your site. I could use cloud computing vendors to fire up more servers so that I could handle the traffic on my site. But I would only pay for the servers while they were up. When the traffic slowed down, they would shut down. I can now have the power of a very large infrastructure, but only pay for it when I need it.

What is some interesting information about "Cloud computing"?

The definition of cloud computing is shown in the Wikipedia link below.

It also states that clouds have five essential characteristics:

on-demand self-service

broad network access

resource pooling

rapid elasticity

measured service

To a business it is like contracting out a service. Instead of the business providing their own water supply or electricity, it is purchased from an expert provider. That is called a utility service. The business arguments are similar to those used for leasing and contracting out other services. "Leave the services to expert providers, while we concentrate on our core business". That means that capital is not tied up with providing a service which is possibly better provided by a shared system, where flexibility is available. The service can be increased or decreased readily. You pay for what you use.

Many aspects of cloud computing already existed, but should not be confused with it:

Self managing systems. A basic example is automated software updates.

Client-server applications. These the client tells the server what it wants. The server send the result. A lot of interactive stuff on the internet is this way. Yahoo Answers I guess.

Distributed or grid computing. An example is the SETI system, where many computers processed tasks handed out by a centralized server, and return the results.

Mainframe computers. The centralised system - users interact with it, and it provides heavy duty resources. In the past the user just had a terminal., not a computer.

Utility computing (service for a fee). Pay for 1GB of storage, or providing an on line service. This can involve distributed computing too.

Peer to peer systems. e.g. sharing resources of those involved as in file sharing with Limewire, BitTorrent etc. In this case, those who download find themselves also serving files to others)

Looking at the above it is easy to see that there is a lot of overlap with each other and that cloud computing is not all that different to utility computing if you look that up. It is a method of selling mainframe style resources, which often had reserve capacity most of the time. My own first contact was through Open Source software (Open Office) and Sun Microsystems/Oracle has an interest in this with their production of mainframe computers and data base software. Others are Amazon (they started it all), Google, IBM, Microsoft, but that is not a complete list at all.

Look up the Key Features in the Wikipedia link.

I expect this will have a significant impact on IT services, with some changes to "who does what". In other words, some will gain from the shift in thinking or use, some will lose. A paradigm shift maybe.

This can be availed online where customers can get storage services, virtual servers, applications and so much more.|||All cloud computing really is is the hosting of software and services in a data center, instead of on a local machine. An example of Cloud based services would be Gmail, Hot mail, Yahoo mail, Google's office tools and other applications that sit on someone else's server, which you can then access from any desktop anywhere in the world.

Google's Chrome OS, which is the big brother to their Android operating system, is Google's attempt to get people to move from their powerful desktop machines, to light weight, super fast machines that are up and running about 10 seconds after you turn them on. This is possible, because the new Chrome based computers won't have to load anything but the small OS, because the computer is set up to access the net for all it's applications, instead of preloading them off the hard drive.

If you're interested in testing one of the laptops for Google, here's the link: http://www.google.com/chromeos/pilot-pro鈥?/a>

As a side note, for those of us in the telecom/data industry who sell cloud based services, most of us sell what's called SaaS, which stands for Software as a Service. SaaS lets a company access software it needs to run, while at the same time lowering it's IT infrastructure costs. IT costs are lower because the company hosting the software keeps the software and licenses up to date. This means companies don't have to have IT teams loading software on hundreds or thousands of computers, and then having to keep paper trails of the licenses for the software.

(I saw a warehouse once, with 100,000 copies of windows on pallets with a guard walking around them. The software was all new, and never used, but the company had to keep them, since they had that many machines using that version of windows. The IT department just ghosted the software on to the hard drives, so they only needed a copy or two to do the actual work...)

What actually is cloud computing?

Ive heard about this term a lot lately, , , i have searched google but the info available in it sounds quite technical. . .can someone please xplain to me in what do we mean by cloud computing? ? ?

PS: by refering to info as technical info i mean TOO MUCH TECHNICAL, i am a student of freshman year computer science so i can understand some technical terms ;)|||Well, to put it simply, its the idea of not having stuff on your hard drive. It makes it where your files are stored on servers somewhere out there in the net (or "cloud") and your programs are also stored on the internet, all that is on your computer is a portal to access the programs and files. you install a small bit of info as a program, but when you open it everything (including the actual program files its self) are being run from a server on the cloud. Its kind of like using outlook connected to an exchange server, you have outlook or a "portal" to access all your info. its a small piece of software on your computer but everything (emails, files, calender, tasks) are all on the server (now, yes there is a file on your computer but thats for cache mode). Thats a very basic way to explain it, but it puts it into prespective. To be honest, as an IT person, i dont like it. No internet, no files or software unless its backed up on your computer...then it kind makes it not worth while; but then again im a person that hates people using LIVE for email instead of exchange server.|||Cloud computing providers deliver applications via the internet, which are accessed from web browsers and desktop and mobile apps, while the business software and data are stored on servers at a remote location. In some cases, legacy applications (line of business applications that until now have been prevalent in thin client Windows computing) are delivered via a screen-sharing technology, while the computing resources are consolidated at a remote data center location; in other cases, entire business applications have been coded using web-based technologies such as AJAX.

Your programs and storage would be accessed online. I don't think that you would even need a hard drive. You could use any computer to work as if it were your computer.

It would allow for some very light and thin laptops, because they wouldn't need the normal amount of components. Also, I would think it would allow for longer warranties, because of the lack of moving parts.|||I believe Cloud is used to refer to Internet based servers where data is stored and programs are run. The concept allows you to log in from almost any Internet connected PC with the appropriate software installed - this is sometimes just an Internet browser. You do not store your data locally (unless you want to keep a local copy). For me, the big problem is that when your PC cannot reach the Cloud, you cannot access your stuff.|||The Cloud (a collection of Server Farms) means that - eventually - we will not need a hard drive to store programs, applications and personal files and information. How is Cloud Computing Considered to be Green I.T?

I don't completely understand why it is considered to be Green I.T|||It centralizes storage and other operations for users, so it reduces the cost of running more servers at a single business or company in turn reducing energy costs.|||Well the study was commissioned by Microsoft "imagine that".

It basically stated that Co2 emissions could be cut by 30% by switching to a Cloud based OS and using lightweight client machines to connect via the net.

Personally (my opinion) you could probably cut current emissions and energy consumption by 40-50% simply by switching to a mini low power consumption Green PC as opposed to standard desktop offerings for general computing and workstations.

Basically ( again my opinion) this is a paranoia tactic from Microsoft to gear people towards thinking that Cloud operating systems are a great idea. Get used to the whole cloud concept as it's going to be a huge point of legal debate over the next decade. Primarily due to intellectual property debates, personal liberties, and licensing,

If it happens (and it will) I'll go with Linux. :)|||About a year ago we started to virtualize a bunch of our servers. Right off the back we saw that the power draw of 4 powerful hosts was less than what used to be at least 30 physical servers. There is also the fact that we used to need backup servers for some of our important stuff so we had servers that just sat there powered down until something crashed and they needed to be booted up. Now our backup servers are in the virtual cloud and are taking up no extra space or recourses so I guess that green in the fact that it one less server physically built.

Im not one of those green freaks so I dont know to much about it. We just decided to move towards a virtual cloud using VMware because it seemed far easier to manage. The saving power was just a bonus for us.

Three top picks for cloud computing companies?

for example , google i think is one , what are two more?|||First, a definition of "cloud computing":

"Utility computing ... also called cloud computing, on-demand computing and software as a service [SaaS] ... exists when the user accesses software and/or data from computing resources located on the network."

There are such a wide variety of options available that you may wish to clarify further what you're looking for. Two examples:

If what you're seeking is online storage and processing cycles, perhaps for a Web-based startup company, you might look into Amazon Web Services (e.g. S3, EC2):

If what you are looking for is a SaaS customer relationship management (CRM) system, one obvious option is Salesforce.com:

Some advantages of SaaS:

Social Media Manager, MightyMeeting|||Cloud computing provides computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services. Parallels to this concept can be drawn with the electricity grid, wherein end-users consume power without needing to understand the component devices or infrastructure required to provide the service.

The concept of cloud computing fills a perpetual need of IT: a way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software. Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT's existing capabilities.[citation needed]

Cloud computing describes a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services based on Internet protocols, and it typically involves provisioning of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources[1][2] It is a byproduct and consequence of the ease-of-access to remote computing sites provided by the Internet.[3] This may take the form of web-based tools or applications that users can access and use through a web browser as if they were programs installed locally on their own computers.[4]

Cloud computing providers deliver applications via the internet, which are accessed from a Web browser, while the business software and data are stored on servers at a remote location. In some cases, legacy applications (line of business applications that until now have been prevalent in thin client Windows computing) are delivered via a screen-sharing technology, while the computing resources are consolidated at a remote data center location; in other cases, entire business applications have been coded using web-based technologies such as AJAX.

Most cloud computing infrastructures consist of services delivered through shared data-centers and appearing as a single point of access for consumers' computing needs. Commercial offerings may be required to meet service level agreements (SLAs), but specific terms are less often negotiated by smaller companies.

What impact would cloud computing have a big impact on society?

i would just want to know about the implications shifting to this new technology would have on society as whole|||it is another cyclical change in computing / info storage.

back in the 1970s, everyone had "dumb terminals" and was hooked to a mainframe where data and processing was done.

In the 80s-90s, we moved to a decentralized model, where we saw great potential for creativity and individuality by having powerful processors and storage at each of our fingertips.

Now, shifting back to the cloud, we already use server-side web technologies to look at inventories, check data from remote equipment, and conduct commerce. Instead of a single mainframe, we are using lots of smaller computing hosts.

By moving our data to the cloud, it swings us back to the old model - everything is on the "mainframe".. or in the "cloud" , and we just access the processing or data we need .

There are good and bad points to this..

Privacy.. obviously, one break-in at a large data warehouse exposes a lot more than a single home computer virus. BUT - how many people really know enough about securing the home computer anyway? Is their data actually safer on a server managed by someone else?

Ubiquity - now, using a cell phone / tablet / laptop / desktop.. or whatever we come up with next.. we can conceivably do everything that today's high-end desktops do. We already do some.. email, chat, gaming, document publishing, movie streaming, .. we can save money by not having to upgrade our equipment every couple of years.. but we shift the market to the eventual few successful cloud services providers. We will need to have access from many more places.. and more bandwidth than an old telephone modem can supply.

Economically - there will be fewer "chokepoints of competition". Right now, we see only a few real contenders to deliver any real internet services to us. As our need to consume scales up, who will be the real providers, and how much will they charge once they get control of the market?

Same for software %26amp; hardware.. if we don't need cutting edge phones or desktops, then the Dell / Apple / IBM / Nvidia manufacturers will wither away while cloud providers like EMC, Amazon, Google and Microsoft wrestle for our software (SaaS - software as a service) and data storage business.

Personally - no more lost phone books, photos, or homework-- it is all backed up on the cloud.

Also, no excuses for lost homework, late taxes, or " I didn't see that email".. it's all in the cloud.

In developing nations - now being targeted by the $100 laptop foundations.. this is great. Any old laptop or machine can access all the computing power and data storage ever needed. No viruses on our local machines, since we don't actually need to store any data there.

power savings - probably in the long run. If we all shut off our computers / laptops instead of running updates and virus scans all night.. we can save a few barrels of oil.

Waste - we're just seeing the peak of demand in the US for consumer electronics. We are throwing away just about the same tonnage of electronics as we buy. already most states have started to segregate this waste as 'hazardous' - or require some level of recycling. If we don't need all that hardware in our homes anymore, we would see a short increase in waste, and a decrease over time as we buy smaller devices less frequently.

I could probably go on.. I think you get my feelings by now.|||Welcome.. I'll look around over next weekend and see if I can back up my words with some published sources.

What is cloud computing/programming?

I want to know about cloud computing. Can somebody help me.|||Hi Black: Below is a snippet from a document about cloud computing explaining cloud computing:

What’s the cloud? “Cloud” is a metaphor for the

Internet. It’s an abstraction of how networks of

computers are connected, in the old days by local

area and wide area networks, now by the Internet.

Over the last 5 to 10 years more companies have

been delivering software that’s accessible from the

Internet. They “own” the software and deliver it as

a “service,” instead of having customers own and

maintain it. Software-as-a-service, or SaaS, is an

application that businesses access and use via the

Internet. The actual software applications reside on

servers all over the web, in the cloud. You can see the document here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/25548900/Transition-to-the-Cloud-Bi101

Why Cloud Computing may have problems in a social setting?

It may not have problems as computer cloud is simply a system of decentralizing data to a distant server. The only problem I foresee is the fact that people might not accept to have their virtual possessions (images, docs, games etc..) not close from them...just as some people prefer CDs and DVDs to virtual copy...because if the internet was to fail (don't care the reasons or the extent), everything would be inaccessible!!

What is cloud ready in reference to computing and data storage?

Can someone explain what it means to be cloud ready in reference to data storage and computing?|||In a nut shell it means having internet access. Other than that, anything you get that is new will have the appropriate hardware to be able to communicate with the cloud and whatever software you need can just be installed.

To sum it up, what exactly is this "cloud computing"?

What do people mean when they talk about "cloud computing" in magazines, advertisement, commercial, companies, etc?

Or is my question too broad?|||'Cloud Computing' has to do with storing your files on the Internet. So for instance, you're writing a letter and you save it temporarily to work on it later. But instead of saving it on your own hard drive you store it on the Internet. You don't even know (or care) where it is, physically, it's just 'out there'. Now two days later you can be sitting in a coffee shop and pull out your netbook and get back to work on it. At the same time it's 'nowhere' and 'everywhere'.

More and more people nowadays save their 'family album' photos at a place like Flickr. They don't even know where they are! But they are safer there than in your computer at home. Plus you don't have to send grandma the pictures you took of the kids at the pool last Saturday, you only have to tell here the URL and maybe a password. Or you can put together an extended 'family album' with your aunts %26amp; uncles %26amp; cousins that everyone can see.

Storage has gotten just incredibly cheap in the last few years. Like $50/terabyte. So you can store stuff online for free or nearly. If you see it as a trend, you can envision a time when computers don't even have their own storage. You turn the computer on, it connects instantly to the Internet, and it has 'unlimited' storage in 'the cloud'.|||Let us simplify this with a simple example: Gmail is a cloud service. Having said that, this doesn't mean that any service hosted on the web is a cloud service. Cloud Computing Services must have following 5 attributes:

---available everywhere i.e. uses Internet technologies, hassle-free, in most cases no installations/downloads etc.

---available on demand i.e. metered like your electric bills.

---can be accessed on any device i.e. device independent.

---Resource Sharing i.e Multi-Tenant (ability of the software to be offered to multiple users),

---Scalable %26amp; Elastic i.e. capacity can be sized up or sized down with in minutes, based on demand. Your business is growing you spin up more servers %26amp; pay only for whatever you use. Come recession %26amp; if your business is shrinking use less number of servers %26amp; pay less. This is as simple %26amp; quick as a simple configuration/settings. (No need to buy infrastructure which may lie idle/unproductive once your business doesn't require them)

A common user will use Cloud SaaS (Gmail, Dropbox etc). Developers %26amp; techies use Cloud IaaS (hosting infrastructure) %26amp; PaaS (development environment).

The investment is growing simply because the cloud market is growing rapidly %26amp; it has immense business potential.|||On a server owned by another company (accessed over the internet), storing data, processing data, etc.

When you upload your files to a file sharing service, that's the cloud. When a company buys server time from Amazon, that's the cloud.|||It's just another "buzz term" for using and accessing applications online (server) rather than the application being accessed from your own computer.

The cloud is actually the internet. Also clouds are depicted as the internet in diagrams, flowchars, etc.|||The "Cloud" is basically a remote computer that allows you to upload and save your files. It can act as a backup or facilitate collaboration.

Google Docs and MS Sky Drive are good, free examples.

Cloud computing business opportunities?

I am interested in starting a business in cloud computing. Do I need to be CSP already for it to be profitable? How much would it cost to set up? And can a startup be profitable?|||Yes........and no to the rest............the cost would be sky high.........

Why do software developers use Cloud Computing?

and are there any things that worried you about using it, or encouraged you to use it?|||Cloud Computing : Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network (typically the Internet).

It allows for programmers, software developers, etc. to share resources worldwide. I encourage use but with safety. Ensure that you have somekind of software or hardware firewall to protect the data being shared across the network.

Does anybody know what Cloud Computing is? Does it prove that there are computers in Heaven?

Take that athiests.|||Cloud Computing combines computing, virtualization, clustering in the distributed environment to provide mobility and collaboration. Cloud represents the large Internet network rather than being concerned about what is on the cloud the only concern is sending data and receiving data. Cloud computing involves building an application using the resource from multiple services potentially from multiple locations, it is also virtual servers over Internet. Cloud computing three main segments are: "applications," "platforms," and "infrastructure." Each segment serves a different purpose and offers different products for businesses and individuals around the world.

Resources available in the cloud can be accessed by you dynamically to perform functions to fulfill your needs from an access point that user need to know and is called SaaS (Software As A Service). Could computing is available as subscription-based or pay-per-use service it is application available on demand.

Cloud computing increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software.

Just search in Google and you will lots of relevant information.|||Wtf. Its hipothetically and reallity wise impossible absoulutly impossalbe to connect with computers in heaven I feel like a retard just say connect with computers I'm heaven.|||I hear they have crappy Internet connection in heaven, though.

What cloud computing applications exist? What programming languages were used to create them?

Silly answer: "Cloud computing" is a ten-dollar term on a nickel errand! :)

Seriously: All it means is that the software you used to have on a computer is now on the Internet and accessible through your web browser. The other case is a web application that offers a new service that you wouldn't have had without the web, but it's so easily accessed that it feels like just another program on your computer. Some examples:

Google apps, BitTorrent, Amazon Mechanical Turk, SQL Services, and, oh, yeah, many Yahoo apps!

For instance, you can bookmark links in your browser, but what do you do when you want to use a different computer, or easily share links with your friends? So we have Delicious.com, where you save your bookmarks "in the cloud". Now all you need to access your bookmarks from any computer in the world is your Delicious.com log-in. What you used to have installed locally is now done remotely.

As for what programming languages, any browser-based or server-based language is likely to be used. Javascript, PHP, ASP, AJAX, Perl, Java, SQL...

How can I share files/documents using cloud computing?

My favorite way to share files is Dropbox. When installed it will create a Dropbox folder in your My Documents. Whatever you want to share, drag into your PUBLIC folder and it will be available for people to look at and download.

To share a file with anyone, RIGHT click the file that is in your PUBLIC folder. Scroll down to the DROPBOX option, it will open a side menu and then from there click COPY PUBLIC LINK. Then paste it into an email or IM to the person you want to share it with and they will be able to click your link and download it directly.

Cloud computing can be portrayed as libraries of old. reasons and examples why this?

What are some key points as for how cloud computing and libraries are alike. Thank you|||The most obvious?

They both are a huge collection of data and information.

Cloud computing whats the difference?

I'm not really understanding the difference between cloud computing and regular server hosting. Doesn't a cloud still have to be hosted on a somewhere? I understand that a cloud is just something where people put a website, or some data that someone can access anywhere and we can increase decrease the amount of clouds based on the amount of traffic.|||1. Firstly, "cloud computing" is a vague term created by marketing as a set of features, and diluted by sales people pushing services when applications aren't obvious to their customers. I will assume we're mainly discussing elastic computing and any technologies necessary to implement that, like hypervisors and distrubuted storage.

Elastic computing is a tool to scale your computer power up and down as needed. It's related to time-share, but instead of one large mainframe to rent server time on, you're given a large cloud of servers to rent or share. You can script the start and closing of additional nodes, to match your use of the cloud to demand for the services those nodes offer.

The important distinction between elastic compute clouds and normal hosting is provisioning. Imagine you run a website that publishes football scores, and you're very popular. To make a profit you need to keep the website responsive under heavy load. We're talking Superbowl heavy load. Constant refreshes and sustained traffic for hours. In order to meet that goal, you could buy a massive server farm that can handle Superbowl traffic, and let them sit mostly idle during the off-season. Or you could buy server time from an elastic compute cloud to make up the difference. Normal hosting services may choose to simply fail during high load, with catastrophic effects on your Superbowl revenue. They may even kick you off for too much CPU use or network traffic.

Economically, cloud computing allows for full employment of servers. Rather than have everyone buy lots of beefy hardware in case of Slashdot, the hardware that would serve Slashdotters can migrate to the sites that need it (and pay for it). Combined with economies of scale, we can expect that large compute farms may become cheaper than hosted or colocated solutions. If APIs are created to migrate servers between clouds, additional competitive forces may help drive prices towards marginal costs; hence the chasm between Amazon and the Cloud Computing Bill of Rights. Some are proposing a cloud marketplace, where cloud computing is bought and sold by principles of supply and demand. This would encourage people to shift compute power to off peak hours, as we see with cell phone plans and industrial use of electricity.

The reasons to stay away from cloud computing are twofold: price, and privacy. None of the above guarantees cloud computing will be cheaper than your current solution. You may be fine with failure during Superbowl events. Or it may be cheaper for you to build and buy your own servers and datacenter. Alternatively, you may have data you would prefer not reside in the hands of anonymous cloud vendors whose security and technology may leak information about your service or your customers. The last part means you may in fact be legally impaired from implementing cloud computing, as the cloud vendor has access to your disk and RAM.

What is cloud computing and why is it popular?

Cloud computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand. There are multiple reasons that it is popular. It allows you to put some of the responsibilities onto someone else....as far as reliability, cost, location, scalability, security, maintenance, metering, etc.

Topic for Security in cloud computing?

I am a MSEE (Masters of science in electrical engineering) graduates tudent and I have to start work on my thesis. The area I wan to work on is Cloud computing and the topic is security. But I need to know what in security. any help appreciated.|||Well I would say that the big general threat in cloud computing is that if someone can compromise the security of the cloud, they could potentially see what EVERYONE else in the cloud is doing and/or alter their data.

Without knowing exactly how detailed you want to go it's hard to say any more than that, but I hope it helps.

Is cloud computing a good career option in India?

I want to learn cloud computing. Is there any training institute in India(bangalore, hyd, chennai) which provide such courses ?

And also i want to know do cloud computing a good career option in India?

I'm a CS graduate, interested to make cloud comp as my career option... pls guide me pros and cons.

Thank you,

Sandy|||"Cloud computing" isn't a career, it's a way of doing something. That's like asking if holding your hand up is a good career. It is if you're directing traffic as a police officer, it's not if you're waving at a friend.

What is cloud computing about? Does it have anything to do with VPN Virtual private Networks ?

Perhaps an off shoot of VPN technology and virtual machines?|||Cloud computing is the data (usually), executables, and CPU cycles are supplied by remote servers. No local backups, all software most up-to-date.

A VPN is "just" adding a distant network segment to a "corporate" one, so that corporate network security can be maintained.|||Facebook is an example of cloud computing. There is nothing to install because it is all on their servers running the program and applications. When Facebooks gets redesigned and updated, all you do is type in a web address and everything is there for you. But there are games and other applications you can access, all without installing anything on your computer.|||cloud computing is simular to an old mainframe system, instead of having your programs on your local computer you connect to a server to access your files. A VPN allows you to tunnel into to an intranet via the public internet.

Please give me a good definition of cloud computing?

1 or 2 sentence.|||The definition Cloud Computing is actually can't be limited to 1/2 lines though worlds most reliable source saying that "Cloud computing means using multiple server computers via a digital network, as though they were one computer.[1] Often, the services available are considered part of cloud computing."...

I strongly recommend you to visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_compu鈥?/a>|||HI,

What is cloud computing? How can I utilize cloud computing if I want to establish a website?

Cloud computing is a new technology which essentially utilizes the power of a cluster of servers to power a website by dynamically scaling and virtualizing resources such as processing power, memory, storage among others.

Each server in the cluster can be thought of as hosting the website - if this is ambiguous to comprehend, then think of it as if your website resides on a super high powered server which never breaks down because this super high powered server actually is a combination of several servers working together.

In reality, your website resides on the cluster which in turn comprises of load-balanced servers that simultaneously answer to the call of transmitting the website to the requester, and are responsible for server-side processing such as executing PHP/ASP/Perl scripts, retrieving and appending to databases etc.

The diametrically opposite solution is dedicated hosting - where your website sits on a dedicated server, and if that dedicated server breaks down or is unable to handle the increase in user requests and traffic, then your website goes down.

Cloud computing is the way to go over dedicated hosting, and if you want to get started, you should plan at least $100/month for your hosting needs - you basically pay for how much traffic you get and how much server resources you use

Good places to look for are Amazon Web Services, Yahoo, and VMware.

Hope this helps. You can email me if you have any questions!|||Cloud computing relates to documents stored on web servers "In the cloud" (on the internet).

This has several advantages, two of the most obvious being instantaneous anywhere access (Like Yahoo Mail) and backup of documents.

Technically any website is "in the cloud" but I assume you want something like Google sites, Where you design the site and it sits on Google's servers, with a minimum of effort. If you just want to access (or share) a document from anywhere, use google docs. The links are in Google's "more" section.

For more help, see the google documentation|||The answer varies with your computing needs. If you need to run a virtual machine in the cloud, then cloud computing is what Amazon offers with EC2. If you just need to use a particular service, then Google Apps would fulfill your cloud computing needs. Finally, depending on what Microsoft eventually offers, Azure would be an answer as to what cloud computing is.

The funniest answer I've seen was posted at this link:

How to implement the word processor in cloud computing?

Hi,I am raja pls answer me if realy its possible|||It's possible. Both Google - http://docs.google.com - and Microsoft - http://windows.live.com and others are already doing it.

It's probably implemented in much the same way as server apps were on mainframes 30 years ago.

Can cloud computing improve the efficiency and effectiveness of accountancy?

It helps in the storage facility. We need not have all software installed in our computer

we can get the software any time we want through cloud computing. This may help to improve the effectiveness of accountancy.

Are there any good certifications in Cloud Computing?

I am looking some foundation level course/certs similar to those we have in networking (like CCNA/P or MSCE).|||You might want to check these references. Hope they help.

Will Cloud computing be a big flop?

Cloud computing will be a security nightmare. With all of the data being online hackers will easily get access to thousands of businesses and consumers data. Cloud computing will be fraught with security problems, especially if the data is kept on Linux machines.

At least Windows allows users to keep all of their software on their own computers.|||First understand what it means. Cloud computing is NOT grid computing, even then security can be controlled without issue if done correctly - but they are totally different.

Cloud computing is a data center 'hiring out' their equipment to users ie: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). (do a Google) Instead of you having the equipment you are using an off site centers equipment, it is not stored and floating around in the internet!

Windows or Linux, you can use what you like, the data, services etc you hire are stored elsewhere. Regardless of how you feel about MS or Linux, a well secured server is a well secured server, the OS is irrelevant. Whatever your desktop environment, both MS and Linux servers can offer services for you.

carling: please keep your information correct (january was a long time ago - we are in July now), this quote of yours is doing the rounds of every anti windows question there is. ..... getting a little boring. Why not also show the data (from your source) about Linux dropping as well?|||With the biggest growth area being portable computing users will need clouds in which to store all their stuff

The operators of clouds probably know as much about security as your average IT dept. As security will be their selling point they should be able to do a good job, apply the highest security to all their customers and be able to afford good security

The best place to hide a tree is in a forest|||Here we go again "yes" your right there It will be fraught with security problems when using windows, is that the reason Microsoft lost over 2 million customers servers to Linux in January of this year, MS customers are leaving like rats abandoning a sinking ship and cats jumping off hot tin roofs That is all the evidence one needs to know,

In the news today MS is now going to release a FREE cut down version of Office 2010 for cloud computing. trying to keep what customers they have left|||the big flop with cloud computing is getting your data back in a timely manner

and linux machines are hands down more secure

and they will have to use linux because Microsoft rapes you on your CAL connections

Cloud Computing??!!!??!?!?

what is it? ive heard it lets you store all of your data (music, videos, pictures, apps, etc.) on the internet account (google docs, etc.) so that you don't need to use a hard drive.. is this true?|||Yes you can get free accounts from Sky Drive or Drop Box amongst others.

You usually get about 25GB of storage space

If you have ADSL broadband with a slow upload speed then it can take ages to upload your files.

I have Sky Drive mapped as a network drive on my computer, it shows up as drive Y on my desktop and i just drag and drop files into it. The files are then sent via the internet to the Sky Drive server which is thousands of miles away.

So long as you can get onto the internet then you can access your files. It doesn't matter who your ISP is, you can use these services just like you would use an email service from google or yahoo or hotmail.

You still need to keep local copies of the files though either on your computer or on an external hard drive just in case you cant get onto the internet. Otherwise when you are offline you would not have access to the files.

Its OK for keeping backups but i wouldn't want to use it for much else just in case i cant get on the internet.

If you want to map Skydrive as a network drive then this is how you do it in Office 2010

1. Open up a Microsoft Office 2010 application, e.g. Word, Excel, etc.

2. Click the File tab

3. Click “Save %26amp; Send”

4. Click “Save to web”

5. Click “Sign In”

6. Type in your Windows Live email address and password and Click OK

7. Choose or create a new folder and then Click Save As.

8. Note: If you want your documents to be private, make sure you don’t use the Public folder

9. When the save window appears, Copy the URL location in the address bar. (note the save window may take a few seconds to appear)

10. Open up the Start Menu, Right-Click “My Computer” and Click “Map network drive”

11. Paste the previously copied URL into the Folder text box, you can also choose what drive letter you want to be associated with the skydrive

12. Check the Connect using different credentials box.

13. Click Finish

14. When prompted enter your Windows Live email address and password again

15. Click OK.|||Pretty much true and the answers that you have got are OK. The question is: do people want to store their own information on their own computer as they have always done in the past or store it somewhere unknown at the far end of a very long "telephone line" that may cease to function at an inappropriate time and deny them access to their their stored information that would have been available if it was on their own hard drive?

I have yet to be convinced that it is feasible at the moment.

They can try to predict and engineer the future, but at the end of the day they must be able to make it work (and reliably) to be able to convince people to change from a satisfactory method of working to what is at the moment a "dream world" that with improving faster and more compact technology may not even be required or indeed saleable.

(If it works as well as the American spell checker on this site it is a definite non-starter)!|||It really depends. If your ISP offers cloud computing or hosting companies, then yes, you can store almost anything. Basically what it is, is a server accessible via the net that you can store files on, run applications from (if capable). Microsoft's has applications loaded onto it that anyone can access and use. Other companies are doing the same for inter-company applications. Some hosting companies are doing it for simple web hosting sites. It's a giant file/storage server. The term 'cloud computing' is new but the concept and application has been around for a long time. Hope this helps.|||yes and no. Most people do not use the term correctly. The "cloud" as you describe it exists for years...the real "cloud" concept is that your computer is not even in your home...the actual computing is done far far away...and then you only receive video/audio and data.

Imagine you have a wireless monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers...and that your computer is in another state... Now this computer is not even yours...it's rented and it taken care of by a company you pay. It means you don't need to take care of updates, upgrades and anything material. It also means your setup at home will cost less since it's not really a computer. Of course, if the internet connection gives up, you have access to absolutely nothing...which is the big problem with "the cloud" concept.|||Yes, you basically have it nailed down.

Its a way of storing data online "In the cloud"

Google are actually in the process of making a computer that doesn't have a hard drive!!! it will only use cloud based storage!!

What companies will benefit from cloud computing and server virtualization?

Specifically, I'm looking for equity investments. Which companies are currently in the BEST position to profit the most from this trend for cloud computing and virtualization? I know 2. I want to hear other's opinions.

Will cloud computing kill IT Outsourcing?

With the advent of cloud computing, even the smallest of businesses has now access to IT architecture once used by major league businesses. Cloud computing is way cheaper, where a user only pays a cheap monthly subscription to keep his/her business running - which may cost lesser than hiring an outsourced worker to do the work. Do you think that cloud computing is a serious threat against outsourcing in the IT sector?|||Cloud computing and outsourcing are very different. Both will help revolutionize the performance of small businesses but I don't believe one is a direct threat to the other, they are not mutually exclusive.

Outsourcing, particularly micro-outsourcing for small businesses is in fact booming and cloud computing is only making the process easier. Most of the decent online outsourcing marketplaces either have moved or are in the process of moving to the cloud. This move delivers performance enhancements for the websites and gives them high levels of scalability and redundancy.

So far in 2010 more than $220m USD has been spent on the leading outsourcing and freelancing marketplaces. This compares to a combined total of $500m between 1999 and 2009. Clearly the Cloud is not going to kill IT Outsourcing. If you check the jobs being posted on the leading marketplaces, IT and Technical jobs are still incredibly popular. The cloud won't create a dynamic, fully functioning iPhone or Android App. Nor will it build you a bespoke WordPress template, nor will it create a custom plugin for Joomla or any other open-source solution.

IT Outsourcing will be around for a long, long time to come.|||Cloud-based computing and Outsourcing services are two different entity. Outsourcing offers a wide range of services like dedicated outsource staff, transcribing, SEO, IT, etc.|||No. I don't see it as a serious threat to outsourced employees. Somebody still needs to code. You can get coders significantly cheaper overseas.

If cloud computing is the future, will it kill traditional programming?

I've recently gotten to grips with C# and C++, hoping to hone my skills further. But I was wondering if anyone knew what cloud computing is all about. If its all computer services done over the internet on a server, will that kill regular programmers who make client side applications?

Should I be looking at other programming languages/skills to help make myself 'futureproof'? Any help would be great, thanks :)|||It depends what you mean by 'traditional programming'. Will programming still be important? Absolutely. Will languages like C and C++ still be used a lot? Probably. You'll just have to learn new styles of programming, especially multithreading and so on, in order to take advantage of the new hardware systems.

That said, I wouldn't be so sure that 'cloud computing is the future'. I think a lot of people are still going to find that owning their own hardware has its advantages. It reduces latency, and it gives you more control. Cloud computing will be used for some tasks, but all of them? I doubt it.|||Cloud computing is basically a generic way of distributing tasks across multiple machines. Whereas one machine typically hosts a process or application, a cloud is just multiple machines dividing up the work. The process can be abstracted so that developers don't focus on distributing the tasks but rather just do what they normally would, so it actually encourages traditional programming but provides greater capabilities.

Cloud computing is only relevant when resources are lacking. Things like Facebook which are very data intensive need clouds, simple tasks don't.|||Cloud computing is such a open ended term but essentially it goes back to the days of dumb terminals or thin clients. You won't need to have the program just access to it. There will still be a need for your programming skills since the cloud will need programs. But for the client side applications and to future proof yourself, you should be able to easily pick up JAVA.|||Cloud computing still requires programmers. You will simply need to make a shift from client side applications to server side and published applications. But it will take many, many, many years still before cloud computing will be the only thing there is. The children of your children will not even witness that.|||Cloud computing will always be programmed by people using 'traditional programming' techniques. Writing code isn't resource-intensive enough to warrant cloud computing.
